Channel Letters vs. Cabinet Signs: Which Is Right for You?

Channel Letters vs. Cabinet Signs: Which Is Right for You?

Almost every lit storefront sign is one of two things: individual channel letters, or a single backlit cabinet. They cost differently, read differently, and suit different buildings. Here is a straight comparison.

Channel letters: individual 3D letters

Channel letters are separate, dimensional letters mounted directly to the facade, each lit from inside by LED. They give a premium, architectural look because the wall shows between and around the letters. They are the standard for brands that want their name to read cleanly and feel high-end.

The trade-off is cost and complexity — each letter is fabricated and wired individually, so a long business name costs more than a compact one. They also need a fairly flat, solid mounting surface.

Cabinet signs: one illuminated box

A cabinet sign is a single enclosed box with a translucent face, lit evenly from within. Because it is one unit, it is usually more affordable than an equivalent set of channel letters, faster to install, and very legible from a distance — the whole face glows.

The look is less bespoke, and the face is a printed or cut graphic rather than dimensional letters. But for maximum visibility per dollar — especially for service businesses and signs seen from a moving car — a cabinet is hard to beat.

How to decide

Choose channel letters if brand feel and a premium, architectural look matter most, and the budget allows. Choose a cabinet if maximum legibility, distance visibility, and value are the priority. Many businesses do both — channel letters on the main facade, a cabinet blade sign for foot traffic.

If you are unsure, send us a photo of your storefront and your logo. We will mock up both options so you can see the difference on your own building before deciding.
